At first glance, hiring a freelancer seems like the fast and easy way to get over the next hurdle in your development saga. And it may very well be. But there are several potential pitfalls when it comes to hiring a freelancer that you’ll need to be aware of.
First of all, know that freelancers are usually working for more than one client at the same time. Their work is largely project-based, meaning they’ll help you to create your app, or the next feature, and then they’ll move on to the next project for the next client. By the very nature of freelance work, freelancers are always on the lookout for the next client.
So you’ll need to ask yourself: How important is it to me that my developer is invested in my project?
Also, even assuming your freelance programmer does a great job for you and produces some great code that gets you over the hump, eventually that code is going to need a tweak, an update, or just some maintenance. Will the next freelancer you hire be able to come in and work within that framework, or will that person want to reinvent the wheel and rewrite your whole project? How far will that decision set you back?
There are times when working with a freelancer makes sense. For example, if you have a temporary need for a quick fix, going with a freelance dev might be the right solution. But if you’re looking to scale your team and take your company and app to the next level, you need to be aware of the pros and the cons of working with freelance talent.
